Edward Kavazanjian, Jr.
Dr. Edward Kavazanjian, Jr. is a Professor at Arizona State University (ASU) and a faculty member at the Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics. With over 20 years of industrial experience prior to his academic career, he has made significant contributions to geotechnical engineering, particularly in geotechnical earthquake engineering, landfill engineering, and the seismic performance of soil-structure systems. Dr. Kavazanjian is renowned for his research on soil behavior under seismic conditions, waste containment systems, and sustainable geotechnical practices. He has played a key role in advancing national and international standards for geotechnical engineering, with a focus on civil infrastructure resilience and sustainability. His industrial background includes leadership roles in large and small consulting firms, managing major projects in geotechnical and landfill engineering, as well as work on Superfund remediation projects. Elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2013, Dr. Kavazanjian is also a leader in the emerging field of biogeotechnical engineering, combining bio-inspired methods with traditional geotechnical practices.
