Paulo Shakarian
Dr. Paulo Shakarian is an Associate Professor in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence at Arizona State University (ASU), where he also serves as the Research Director for the school. His research focuses on the fusion of symbolic artificial intelligence and machine learning, and he has published numerous books and papers on these topics. Dr. Shakarian has received multiple prestigious awards, including the KDD Rising Star, the Air Force Young Investigator award, and several “best paper” awards. He has been funded by leading organizations such as IARPA, DARPA, ONR, and AFOSR, and has co-founded a startup that used machine learning for predicting cyber exploits, which was later acquired after raising $8 million in venture capital. In addition to his academic and entrepreneurial work, Dr. Shakarian manages the Neuro Symbolic Channel on YouTube, which has over 2,000 subscribers. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a B.S. in computer science from West Point. Earlier in his career, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army, completing two combat tours in Iraq and earning the Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal for Valor.
