SPR-794

Title:Enhancing Arizona Roadways’ Resilience to Wildfire Through Vegetation Recovery
Project Number:SPR-794
Principal Investigator:Daoqin Tong, ASU
ADOT PM:David Proffitt
Area:Operations
Categories:Standard
Start Date:10/01/24
Duration:18 months

Description:

This study will assess whether ADOT’s vegetation-management practices that support native plant recovery after wildfires can reduce roadway repair and maintenance costs. Wildfires can cause long-term damage to roadways through erosion and debris flows, exacerbated by the slow recovery of native plants. The presence of invasive, flammable species increases future wildfire risk and management costs. By partnering with land-management agencies, ADOT seeks to improve wildfire resilience and establish effective post-wildfire maintenance practices.

Goal:

The goal is to determine if ADOT's native plant recovery practices post-wildfire can lower roadway repair and maintenance costs. Additionally, the study aims to establish best practices for managing roadside vegetation to improve resilience and reduce wildfire risk.
