Description:
ADOT is required to analyze crashes on the state’s highway network and to implement safety projects that reduce the frequency and severity of crashes on the state’s public roadways. Federal funding is available for safety projects that meet eligibility requirements for the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). As described in 23 U.S.C. 148(c)(1), to obligate HSIP funds, states must have in effect a state HSIP under which the state develops, implements, and updates a strategic highway safety plan (SHSP) that identifies and analyzes highway safety problems and opportunities; produces a program of projects and strategies to reduce identified safety problems; and evaluates the SHSP on a regularly recurring basis to ensure the accuracy of data and priority of proposed strategies. Improving methods to evaluate the effectiveness of safety countermeasures would help ADOT allocate resources more efficiently regarding both financial costs and lives saved.
Goal:
The primary objective of this study is to develop crash modification factors for previously implemented safety countermeasures on Arizona roadways using Arizona-specific data.
