Title:Exploring AI Technology For Transportation Data Applications
Project Number:SPR-802
Principal Investigator:Dr. Edward J Smaglik, NAU
ADOT PM:Julie Mcllwain
Area:Operations
Categories:Expedited

Description:

Automation and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to significantly impact the future of how we live, work, and even interact with others. AI has endless potential for advantages such as automating tasks, increased productivity, reducing human errors, and analyzing large amounts of data—just to name a few. However, with the rapid growth and new development of this technology, integrating AI technology into existing systems may also pose significant social, ethical, and safety risks. In addition, regulatory issues may pose significant challenges since, currently, there is neither a single policy or approach that regulates how the data is used. Overcoming these challenges and the public's data privacy concerns will require responsible design decisions with ethics, transparency, and regulation at the forefront. While the private sector will primarily drive the progress of AI, the government plays a critical role in the oversight of how the technology will ultimately be used. This research would then inform Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) on the use, benefits, and challenges of using AI in collecting and utilizing quality transportation data. At some point, ADOT may determine that AI may be suitable for some noncritical functions within the organization.
